...which is odd, because there is nothing exciting about Katie Barnes' life. Two years out of college, and Katie is still stuck in her tiny hometown working at the cookie shop she’s called home since high school. Time and complacency have robbed her of all of her friends save for one: an 18 year- old co-worker named Felix. She has no boyfriend and no hope of one, because she still lives with her parents. Dreams of travel, career and adventure have almost all slipped away, and it’s the knowledge of something better that taunts Katie. It’s this knowledge that’s driving her crazy, that’s turning her sour, because she has no idea what that better something might be.
Her puppy dog co-worker, Felix, notices the change and suffers the consequences. Their days, once filled with bakery dance parties, are now marked by his solo performances and her brooding presence. And if Katie is short-tempered with Felix, it’s all out war with her customers. Each picky old lady that comes into the shop nudges Katie closer to the edge. The unexpected ultimately pushes her over.
A mysterious stalker on roller skates, Rose, seems hell-bent on unravelling Katie’s life, but a boy beats her to the punch. On paper, Cody Bell is exactly the sort of excitement that Katie needs, and when he strolls into the shop one boring afternoon, she wonders if he’s her salvation. Maybe he’s that better something that she’s been looking for. She jumps in with both feet, discovering an alternative side of her small town, all the while creeping unknowingly closer to Rose and whispers of what could be a cult. When Cody ultimately disappoints her, Katie’s life is in a shambles.
With a broken heart and the prospect of losing her job, Katie spirals into the bizarre, hipster universe to which she’s just been introduced. It leads her straight to Rose and the band of disaffected twenty-somethings that rally around a woman known as Disco Daniella. At Katie’s lowest moment, tripping on psychedelic-laced beer at a house party, Daniella comes to Katie’s rescue. But is Daniella her fairy godmother or the cult leader that everyone in town says she is? Katie is willing to take the chance.
